Independent Physicians Agree Proposition 1 Will Bring Much-needed Treatment and Resources to Address California’s Mental Illness and Homeless Crisis

Sacramento, CA — The Physician Association of California today announced it has endorsed Proposition 1. The measure will appear on the March primary ballot and amend the Mental Health Services Act to refocus billions of dollars to help treat those with critical mental illness.

“The Physician Association of California and its 14,000 members are proud to support Proposition 1. As healthcare providers we have seen firsthand the impacts the state’s homeless and mental health crisis have had on our healthcare infrastructure,” said Dr. Join Luh, a physician in Eureka, California who serves as a PAC Board Member. “Providing comprehensive mental health services is a critical step in addressing the interconnected challenges of homelessness and substance abuse. By investing in effective treatment and supportive housing, Proposition 1 offers a real solution.”

Prop 1 uses existing state funds to help Californians who are most in need of treatment and will refocus billions of dollars in existing funds to prioritize Californians with the deepest mental health needs, living in encampments, or suffering the worst substance use issues. PAC will urge its members to vote “yes” on Proposition 1 and has contributed to the ballot committee supporting the measure.
